Scholarships for Three MHS Seniors

Congratulations to the Middleton High School seniors,
June 2010

Gretchen Benz (below left to right), Eric Polich, and Leah Patullo, recipients of scholarships from Middleton Sertoma at Fitzgeralds of Middleton. All three students have have volunteered their time in various community activities. All three recipients are going into premed as they enter their respective universities in the fall. Gretchen will attend the University of Michigan. Eric and Leah plan to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
They were awarded their scholarships at a dinner at Fitzgeralds Tuesday June 8^th.
Each student was active in student government in high school. Each was actively volunteering in our community, whether at their church, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army or MOM.

2010 Service to Mankind

It's time to catch up on past activities.

Al Stoppleworth was our 2010 Service to Mankind recipient. Al has long helped and participated in "Buckets for Hunger" food drive. In acknowledging Al's work our club made a donation to the Buckets for Hunger campaign.

We also honored Audrey Gilliam who was our 2009 Service to Mankind award winner as Illinois-Wisconsin district winn er of the Service to Mankind award. The Service to Mankind award is the highest award that a Sertoma club can award for people who do extensive volunteer work in their community.

Sertoma at Middleton's "Good Neighborfest"

If you have had a hot-dog or hamburger at the "Good Neighborfest", you have helped Middleton Sertoma and you have been a good neighbor. You allow us to support and fulfill needs in our community!

We routinely support the following:
MOM (Middleton Outreach Ministry),
Provide scholarships to three Middleton High School Seniors who have volunteered and served others in our community,
Recognized fifth grade students who have created a poster on our national heritage.
Support speech and hearing needs
Support scout and local youth athletics

Scholarships awarded to three Middleton High School seniors.

This class has probably done more service in our community than any previous class. Our three recipients certainly have been significant contributers to this service.
The first recipient is Mary Thomas (no picture). She is planning to attend UW Whitewater.

Our second recipient is Barbara Liu. She is planning to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison majoring in International Relations. While in high school she was on student council. She volunteered at the UW hospital working at the information desk and participating in blood drives. She participated in a UW band for high school students.
Our third recipient is Adrienne Wells. She is also planning to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison. While in high school she was a member of the Key Club, played soccer and was on student council. She volunteered at the Middleton library and helped with education at St. Bernards.
Both Barbara and Adrienne attended Badger Girls State.

Our congratulations to these young women on their accomplishments! We wish them the best in on-going education.

Service to Mankind in th eGood Neighbor City 2009

Middleton Sertoma Club in a joint meeting the Madison Sertoma club awards our Service to Mankind award for 2009 to Audrey Gilliam.

Audrey Gilliam has a caring, compassionate heart and lives her life in the service of others. Audrey has a long history of volunteerism wherever she has lived. Audrey and Haywood have lived around the world following Dr Gilliam’s various duty stations in the medical corps of the US Air Force starting at Selfridge AF Base in MI. and finally settling in Middleton in 1989.

Audge loves working with people. Years ago she was a “Big Sister” in Virginia and later in life, she and Haywood opened their home for a displaced family member (nephew) who needed a place to stay and grow up in a safe and loving environment. Andrew is a wonderful young man with a beautiful family who is eternally grateful to Audrey and Haywood.
Not long after arriving in Madison, Audrey started working with the YWCA and became an active Board member and various duties. She and her husband, Haywood joined MCC (Middleton Community Church) and Audrey has served on the Board of Deacons, Fellowship, Greeters, special projects and Choir.

She has a 15 year relationship with Attic Angels. She has been a Board Member and a choir participant for Hilldale Mall performances. She is very active with Residence Services activities for Attic Angels residents. She set up and administered the AA House Tours and even acted as a docent guide at homes. She ws co-chair of the AA Sale, their major fund-raiser.
Audrey joined a wonderful group of ladies, “Women In Focus” in Madison and has made many dear friends while raising money for scholarships for Madison children. WIF sponsor and Audrey helps with the South Madison Reading Program. Audge has risen in leadership roles with these ladies and is currently President of the Club .

Audrey became involved many years ago with Middleton Outreach Ministry and advocates for Middleton’s needy in numerous ways including a stint on the MOM Board and many committees and hours in volunteer activities.

Audrey has been a member of Meriter Hospital Volunteer Services. She has spent many hours as a patient representative helping with myriad issues with a kind manner and appropriate words of encouragement. Audrey does admit not all her jobs have been met with joy, apparently Audge isn’t endowed with waitress talents and isn’t enthused at waiting tables in the snack bar anymore.

Audrey organizes a yearly Gala for UW-Madison campus ministries, The Crossing. She does administrative volunteer help at Planned Parenthood, but she doesn’t draw blood, no exceptions.

Audrey has been in active leadership roles, now as a Food Coordinator volunteer, for Interfaith Hospitality Network, now known as “The Way Home”. Audge even takes time to act as baby-sitter (she loves to play with kids) for TWH clients so Moms can have a break.

Last but not least she is still active with her college sorority and the girls here in Madison, Delta Sigma Theta.

These are but a sampling of Audrey Gilliam’s loving, giving life.

National Heritage Awards 2009

“America’s Heritage and Me” was the theme for the 5^th grade students in Middleton’s schools.

Middleton Sertoma Club has again sponsored this poster competition as we reflect and study our heritage. There were many excellent posters submitted for this competition. Participants viewed the theme from different perspectives. They ranged from a personal look in there families to a collection of events that shape us all. Awards were presented at Fitzgeralds of Middleton.

From left to right, the winners are: Madison Pincombe from Sauk Trail, Greta Hevesi from Northside, Mathew Kaamel from Elm Lawn, and Brad Allen from Sunset Ridge. First place winners from each school receive a $50.00 check.

The second and third place winners also receive a cash prize. Second place winners are: Ambriel Styve-Hector from Saul Trail, Mathew Wokai, Northside, Anna Welter Andt, Elm Lawn, and Hailee Milton from Sunset Ridge. Third place winners are: Lizzy Stolow from Saul Trail, Anna Ashley, Northside, Joey Levin Elm Lawn, and Drew Finley Hagg from Sunset Ridge. Congratulations to all who participated!

The grand-prize winner, Greta Hevesi (at right) receives a hundred dollar savings bond and has her name on a plaque given to her school. Her teacher is Ms Kolz.

We also presented a financial gift to Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM). They have contact with people in the community may be struggling in some way, particularly in the current economy. Accepting the check for MOM as that refer to themselves, was Diane Bright. The check was presented by Tom & Adam.
Diane is also the POP (Project for Older People) coordinator. She told us the MOM had 52 new families apply for help in November. Also that Mom distributed 350 Thanksgiving baskets in this area.

December 2008 meeting

Following out meal we presented a financial gift to the Middleton Free Clinic headed up by Dr and Mrs Karofsky. DR. Karofsky was our 2008 Service to Mankind winner for his service to the youth in this community. His wife is the active partner in their efforts in this clinic. Adam Warriner presented the Karofskys with a check for use at the clinic.

December 2008 meeting

Thanks to Ann Albert, their director and to all the Kromery Middle school students who participated in the chorus and to their parents who got the students to our meeting. All enjoyed the Kromery Chorus in our Holiday meeting December 2^nd at Fitzgeralds. They sung a great block of songs to get us in the Holiday spirit. At that time we made a donation to the Choir to provide some help for things they need.

Middleton High School seniors were awarded scholarships
Three outstanding Middleton High School seniors were awarded scholarships
by Middleton Sertoma club in the awards banquet at Fitzgeralds. At least one
of each student’s parents was able to join the recipients.

The accompanying photo shows the recipients, (from left to right) Kate Koberle,
Max Dallman, and Deanna Hunt at the awards dinner at Fitzgerald’s on Tuesday
evening May 27^th. Kate & Deanna are in the National Honor Society. All three
have been scholastically outstanding.

All of these individuals in addition to their academic accomplishments also served
others by volunteering during their time while attending Middleton High School.
In his volunteering and serving in the community, Max helped MOM
(Middleton Outreach Ministry). Deanna volunteered at 3 Gaits Riding Camp for
Disabled children as a councilor one summer. Kate volunteered at Troy Gardens.

Max is planning to attend UW Lacrosse and major in biology.

Kate is planning to attend the UW Madison this fall and major in engineering.

Deanna is planning to attend the University of Minnesota and major in graphics design.

Service to Mankind Award for 2008

Dr. Karofsky was presented with the Service to Mankind award by Tom Howells (left) copresident of Middleton Sertoma for 2008 at Fitzgeralds. This award is the highest honor that is given to non-Sertoma menbers for outstanding service to the community.
In 2004 Dr Karofsky opened the Middleton Free Clinic for high school and middleschool students who could not otherwise afford medical care. In this setting he is able to spend more time with each patient where it is needed. He sees childern for any health need. Kathy his wife is the business manager and receptionist. It is also a place that UW medical school students can volenteer their time and fullfill their rotations in public health.
Dr. Karofsky gave thanks to the local community for its apreciation. He also included his wife for the key role she has in the clinic. He recognized the Dean Foundation and UW Hospitals for their roles for providing space and services at a very nominal rate.

Middleton Sertoma also supports MOM

Also attending this meeting was Dietrich Greun from Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM).

Dietrich told us of MOM’s (Middleton Outreach Ministry's) beginnings, its heritage as it is. The organization had a small start at St. Luke’s. They now have 11 supporting churches. MOMs services fill a great need. They had 1400 clients in 2007. Whether, its food from their food pantry, some clothes or other items or even financial assistance, it can help families while they get situated in a job or go through other personal crisis situations.

Middleton Sertoma club Supports Middleton Outreach Ministry. MOM is supported by our help in the food pantry and financially. Our co-president Tom Howells presented MOM’s director Dietrich Gruen with a check to help them continue their work in this community.

Sertoman of the Year for 2008

Jim Stubbe received the award of Sertoman of the year for 2007. This award is Sertoma’s highest for one of its members. In a weather-delayed award ceremony Paul Voss, co-president of Middleton Sertoma club presented the award to Jim on the behalf of the club at Fitzgeralds of Middleton.

Jim has taken the lead for the National Heritage poster competition for Middleton’s fifth grade students. He gets the materials to the various fifth grade teachers in the Middleton elementary schools, collects the posters, leads our judging and returns the posters. He works with the middle school swing choir and also takes the lead in making the arrangements for the 3 scholarships we give to the Middleton high school seniors. He has done this for as many years as the author has been parto of Sertoma.

He does this each year, so the club wanted to honor him for his service in this community.

National Heritage Awards - Feb 2008

Winners of the 2008 National Heritage Poster competition in Middleton’s four elementary schools were recognized by the Middleton Sertoma club. The top three posters from each school were on display. Each of the four of the first place winners and their parents were present for the awards at Fitzgerald’s.

This year’s theme was “America and my Heritage”. This past week with President’s Day honors some of our outstanding leaders in history and we honor many of the heritages that made our country. Middleton Sertoma has again sponsored the competition for 5^th grade students in the four Middleton elementary schools during our National Heritage Week. Many excellent posters where submitted. They were judged on expression of the theme, following the guidelines, use of color and creativity. We had many entries with nearly 60 from ELm Lawn. We very much appreciate all the time and talent invested into this contest and congratulates all the participants on a great job.
